Massage Therapy for Washington L&I and Federal Workers’ Compensation Claims
A work injury can affect much more than the injured area itself.
Pain, stiffness, limited movement, sleep disruption, difficulty sitting or standing, and problems returning to normal activity can continue long after the initial injury.
At Tri-Cities Medical Massage, we provide massage therapy for appropriate work-related injuries covered through Washington L&I and FECA, when the treatment is related to an accepted condition and meets the requirements of the claim.
Our goal is to help reduce the soft-tissue restrictions that may be contributing to pain and limited function while clearly documenting how you are progressing.
Washington L&I
If you have an open Washington workers’ compensation claim, massage therapy may be covered when it is appropriate for an accepted condition on your claim.
L&I usually covers your first several massage visits without extra paperwork. If you need more, we handle the authorization request.
What We Need Before Treatment
To begin L&I care, we may need:
- Your L&I claim number
- Date of injury
- Accepted condition or diagnosis
- Claim manager information
- Attending provider information
- Referral or treatment order when required
- Information about previous massage visits on the claim
We verify the information needed for billing and authorization before establishing ongoing care whenever possible.
What We Treat
Massage therapy may be appropriate for work-related conditions involving:
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Back pain
- Muscular tension and restriction
- Soft-tissue injury
- Reduced movement
- Pain with work or daily activity
- Persistent muscular or fascial restrictions related to the accepted condition
Treatment must remain related to the accepted work injury.
Progress Matters
Washington L&I expects treatment to be directed toward functional improvement rather than indefinite palliative care. We document symptoms, functional limitations, treatment response, and progress over time so the record reflects whether care remains clinically appropriate.
FECA
Federal Workers’ Compensation Care
FECA, the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act, provides workers’ compensation benefits for eligible federal employees with accepted work-related injuries or illnesses.
Medical providers must be enrolled with the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs, or OWCP, in order to receive reimbursement for treatment of injured federal employees. Authorization and billing are handled through the OWCP Medical Bill Processing Portal.
FECA Treatment Must Be Authorized Appropriately
FECA coverage is tied to the accepted condition and the requirements of the individual claim.
Before beginning treatment, we may need to confirm:
- Your FECA case number
- Accepted condition
- Treating or referring provider
- Whether prior authorization is required
- The services and frequency authorized
- Relevant medical documentation
OWCP authorization requirements can vary by service and case, so treatment should not begin based solely on the fact that a FECA claim is open.
Working With Your Medical Provider
FECA care is part of a larger medical treatment plan.
When massage therapy is appropriate and authorized, we provide focused treatment for the muscular and soft-tissue effects associated with the accepted injury and communicate with the medical team when needed.
Your First Appointment
All initial appointments are 90 minutes.
Your first visit gives us time to understand:
- How the injury occurred
- Your accepted condition
- Where you are experiencing pain, stiffness, or restricted movement
- How the injury affects work and daily activity
- Other treatment you are currently receiving
- What has improved
- What remains limited
- Your goals for care
Treatment is provided as appropriate based on your condition and authorization.
Thorough Documentation
Work-injury treatment requires clear records.
We document:
- Current symptoms
- Functional limitations
- Relevant objective findings within our scope
- Areas treated
- Response to treatment
- Progress over time
- Remaining limitations
Our goal is for the chart to clearly show why treatment is being provided and how you are responding.
Questions About Your Claim?
Washington L&I and FECA operate under different rules, and coverage depends on the details of your individual claim.
If you are unsure whether massage therapy is currently covered or authorized, contact us with your claim information and we can help determine what is needed before your first visit.
