Support for Swelling, Scar Tissue, Tightness, and Restricted Movement After Surgery
Surgery may solve the original problem, but recovery can leave you dealing with a completely different set of challenges.
Swelling. Tightness. Scar tissue. Areas that feel firm, restricted, numb, tender, or simply different than they did before. You may notice that movement feels limited, clothing feels uncomfortable, or the tissues around your surgical area do not seem to be moving normally.
At Tri-Cities Medical Massage, we provide specialized hands-on care for the lymphatic, fascial, and scar-related changes that can occur after surgery.
Our goal is to help you move through recovery with less swelling and restriction, better tissue mobility, and greater comfort in everyday life.
Your Care May Include
Post-Surgical Massage
Post-surgical treatment is individualized to where you are in recovery.
Depending on your procedure, healing stage, and medical guidance, care may focus on:
- Swelling and fluid accumulation
- Tissue tightness and restriction
- Areas of firmness or congestion
- Reduced mobility around a surgical site
- Discomfort with movement
- Scar tissue as healing progresses
- Compensatory tension that develops as you protect or move differently after surgery
Treatment is adjusted as your tissues change throughout recovery.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle, specialized technique used to support the movement of lymphatic fluid.
It may be appropriate for people experiencing post-surgical swelling or for those whose lymphatic system has been affected by surgery, cancer treatment, lymph-node removal, radiation, or other medical conditions.
This is not deep massage. Lymphatic work uses specific, gentle techniques based on the location of swelling and the condition of the lymphatic system.
Lymphedema & Complete Decongestive Therapy
For people living with lymphedema, treatment may involve Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) as appropriate.
Care may include:
- Manual lymphatic drainage
- Compression education and support
- Skin-care education
- Movement and self-management strategies
- Monitoring changes in swelling and tissue condition
Lymphedema care is different from ordinary massage and should be provided by a therapist with appropriate lymphatic training.
Scar Tissue & Fibrosis
A scar is more than what you can see on the skin.
Healing tissues can become thickened, adhered, firm, or less mobile, sometimes affecting the tissues around and beneath the surgical area.
Scar-focused treatment may help improve tissue mobility and address restrictions that contribute to:
- Pulling or tightness
- Limited movement
- Discomfort with stretching or activity
- Areas of firmness
- Fascial restriction around the surgical site
Treatment is always adapted to the age and condition of the scar and your stage of healing.
After Cancer Treatment
Surgery, lymph-node removal, radiation, and reconstruction can create unique changes in the tissues and lymphatic system.
We work with clients experiencing concerns such as:
- Post-mastectomy tightness
- Chest-wall and shoulder restriction
- Scar tissue
- Radiation-related tissue changes
- Swelling following lymph-node removal
- Reduced comfort or mobility after reconstruction
Care is individualized and coordinated with your medical team when appropriate.
Your First Appointment
All initial appointments are 90 minutes.
Your first visit gives us time to understand:
- What procedure you had
- When your surgery occurred
- Where swelling, tightness, or discomfort is occurring
- How your movement and daily activities have changed
- Any lymph nodes that were removed or treated
- Radiation history, when relevant
- Current compression garments or other post-operative instructions
- Your surgeon’s restrictions and recommendations
- What you most want help with
We will also determine what type of treatment is appropriate for your current stage of recovery.
If you are very early in the healing process, we may request medical clearance before beginning treatment.
Why Specialized Care Matters
Post-surgical tissues do not always need more pressure.
They need the right treatment at the right stage of healing.
Our therapists consider swelling, tissue integrity, scar development, lymphatic changes, medical history, and your current function when planning care.
We do not use a one-size-fits-all post-surgical protocol.
Care That Changes as You Recover
What you need shortly after surgery may be very different from what you need several weeks or months later.
Early treatment may focus more heavily on swelling and comfort.
As healing progresses, treatment may shift toward scar mobility, fascial restriction, movement, and persistent areas of tightness or fibrosis.
Your treatment plan changes as your recovery changes.
